Background
Ben provides the main antagonist of our film. He is the lead character and dominates not only the female hostages but his fellow room mates. He should have an element of calm about him, to come across menacing, and so it provoke a reaction from the audience when he 'cracks' and brakes his cool. He should appear carefree, fearless and guiltless, showing no remorse for his actions. Ben is a dynamic character and forseful to Lola in the extract, so I looked for examples of hostage situations featuring a dominant male character. I was looking for possible inspiration in terms of camera movement, angles, mise-en-scene (most importantly lighting), and music. Here are three examples of my research.
Funny Games (2007)
"Funny Games" also has a strong male dominance theme, and this clips shows Paul threatening Ann. The setting looks inviting and cosy, as it represents the families home before the intruders came. Paul is dressed in all white clothing including gloves. It contrasts his dark personality and mindset, and looks almost angelic. Ann is dressed in dirty clothes, and her appearance is generally messy, with a sweaty look to symbolise her struggles. She shows expressions on anguish in close ups that focus on her for several seconds in centre-screen. The camera focuses on her only in close up's at a subtle low angle, portraying her as inferior in comparison to Paul, who is shot in high angle. They are both in side lighting, showing they each have two sides. No music plays during the scene, only diegetic sounds you would expect at night time such as crickets chirping. The scene plays with the use of shot-reverse-shots, showing the exchange between Paul and Ann, as Paul is the dominant character, not only over the hostages, like Ann, but his brother Peter whom is helping him.
