NAME: Ben

AGE: 17

OCCUPATION: Student.

CHARACTER TRAITS / PERSONALITY:

Ben is the only male hostage, therefore he is the only one able to overpower ‘dad’. He is Kate's older brother but seems almost parental toward her. Ben is wearing jeans and a top, and his face is drained from the experience of being captured. Ben has seen the death of a previous hostage Charlie, so he has learnt that in order to survive he has to agree with ‘mum’ and ‘dad’. Ben she's himself as the physical protector of not only his sister but Lola as well. He is quiet around ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ while they plan to escape as  Ben knows that in order for the three hostages to try and escape, he will need to overpower them. Ben studies the ‘Clarke’s’ live their day to day life. He knows when ‘dad’ goes to work, and when ‘mum’ goes for the shopping and knows he needs to support Kate who is weaker than himself. He feels for Lola, as she acts out and distracts Steve, taking the punishments as she know the others won't be hurt. Ben ends up being the protector of the hostages since he is physically the most powerful. 

FUNCTION:

Ben knows that he can’t speak out of line in front of ‘mum’ and ‘dad’, so always tries to stay quiet whenever they are around, unless he is spoken to. Ben simply sits and watches Lola get taken away by ‘dad’ even though he knows what happened to the previous hostage Charlie for the sake of himself. In a way this is a selfish trait. But when the time comes to confront 'dad', Ben know it is his responsibility to protect Kate, who is very frightened, and Lola who has suffered terribly. Although at first seeming selfish, he become the protector.
